For Parents

boy and his dad play catch The Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship program is based on a "train-the-trainer" approach.

As a youth sports leader, you will recommend several representatives or team parents who are already recognized as positive role models for both parents and youngsters. These individuals will be trained by our educators to conduct the parent training modules at the local level. This ensures community ownership of the program’s ideals and makes implementation of the training sessions convenient and manageable. All educational materials, such as videos, pledges, and behavioral guidelines will be supplied by the Youth Sportsmanship program for each team.

For coaches, officials, and facility managers

Coaches and officials receive their educational component in conjunction with each sport’s and league’s specific certification training. For sports facility managers, a Saint Barnabas’ Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship educator will conduct special sessions to teach de-escalation techniques, as well the sanctions of each league to ensure compliance.

For league administrators

The Saint Barnabas Youth Sportsmanship team will make recommendations on physical and behavioral boundaries appropriate for each league’s needs. For example, we will assess venues utilized for league play and provide guidance for effective seating for players and spectators. Working with league administrators, we will also develop appropriate sanctions for each sport.

All youth sports leagues in New Jersey and the surrounding region are eligible for the program.

We Support You All Season Long

Positive reinforcement and team recognition are two important ways the Rediscovering Youth Sportsmanship program supports leagues and helps maintain enthusiasm for good sportsmanship. A committee from the Saint Barnabas Sports Medicine Institute will accept nominations from league members for teams who demonstrate outstanding behavior. Recognition may include team photos in newspaper advertisements, a team trophy, team gifts, or a donation to the team.

Surveys and other assessment tools are provided throughout the season to measure the success of the program for each league.
